Ronald Schumacher

Ronald J. Schumacher 62, of Holmen, WI., passed away peacefully on Friday, July 04, 2014 surrounded by family at his home in Holmen, WI. He had been battling pancreatic cancer since August 2012. Ron was born on September 12, 1951 in La Crosse, WI to Joe “Bud” and Edna (Smolek) Schumacher. Ron attended school in La Crosse and graduated from Aquinas High School in May 1970. He met his wife, Vicki (Delaney), while they were both working at St. Francis Hospital in La Crosse, marrying on March 16, 1974 at Trinity Lutheran church. They built a house on the south side of La Crosse in the fall of 1976 and raised their four children there: Matthew (Rebecca) Schumacher, Scott Schumacher, Michael (Katie Stolt) Schumacher, and Sara Schumacher. In 1975, Ron started a 25 year career in vending as a route person at Canteen Vending. He held various other positions in the company that was renamed CL Swanson and ended up moving to Bradenton, Florida with Vicki and Sara while working there. While loving the weather in Florida, missing family and friends led to a decision to move back to the La Crosse area in 2000. Upon returning to La Crosse, Ron worked as a Maintenance Supervisor at Bethany St. Joseph’s Nursing Home for 5 years. Ron ended his working career right where he started, only this time it was called, Mayo Clinic Health System. Ron was the Custodian Supervisor for 7 years until cancer forced him to retire in May 2013. Ron enjoyed visiting and living in Florida and was an avid Packer fan. He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and took particular delight in spending time on the river. Ron had a sweet tooth with a special affinity for pie from the Norske Nook and turtles from the Sweet Shoppe. He also enjoyed listening to and dancing with his wife to many local bands and especially Elvis, a love he also passed on to his granddaughters. Ron was the first to offer a helping hand to any project and always put others before himself. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, Miriam “Toots” and Ralph Breecher and Robert Delaney, his sister, Patricia Tanner, brothers-in-law, Gerald Biesen and Ed Tanner. Ron is survived by his wife and children, grandchildren: Hunter Garbers, Isaac, Anna, Jacey, Paige Schumacher, sisters: Gloria Biesen, Carol (Roger) Forer, and Ruth (Paul) Fairbanks, brothers and sisters-in-law: Hal (Karen) Delaney, Linda (Felix) Mendiola, Bruce (Laurie) Delaney, Todd (Melissa) Delaney and many nieces and nephews. The Schumacher Family would like to thank all of the caring staff at Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice and Cancer Center for all the care they provided for Ron. A special thank you to Ron’s sisters, his god-daughter, Niki, and his son, Scott, for the countless hours and care they were able to provide. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Friday, July 11, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran church in La Crosse. Pastor Erik Feig will officiate. Burial will follow in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call on the family Thursday evening from 5 until 7 pm at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral and Cremation Services La Crosse chapel; 200 West Ave. South and again at the church on Friday from 10 am until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred and will be used in Ron’s memory.
