Daniel Phelps

Daniel E. “Elwood” Phelps died on July 30, 2021, from cancer. He was in the loving care of his son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Gina Phelps and the Gundersen Hospice team when he passed away to be with his beloved wife, Carmen.

He is survived by his three children, Joe Phelps, Tom (Gina) Phelps, and Holly (John) Berger; his grandchildren, Ethan, Arlo, and Finn Phelps, Jayden Gilman, Leo and Will Berger; his four sisters, Karen Kleven and Maureen Slane of Florida, Anita (Mike) Crandall and Sue (Bill) Snyder of LaCrosse; several nieces and nephews; dear friends Sue Thurston and Rhonda Hesselberg; many good friends and his dog, Abbey.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elwood and Dorothy Phelps, nephew Brad Snyder and his wife, Carmen Phelps.
Elwood was born in La Crosse and attended St. John’s primary school and Aquinas High School. He entered the United States Marine Corps in 1970 at the age of 17. After an honorable discharge from the service, he was employed at McLoone Metal Graphics before spending the rest of his career employed by G. Heilman Brewery and City Brewery. He received an Associates Degree in Diesel Mechanics from WTC in 2001, receiving recognition for highest academic honors. He retired from the brewery in 2013 at the age of 60. He spent his retirement enjoying his family, playing golf, fishing and making rounds at some of his favorite establishments to visit with his many friends. He will be greatly missed for his kindness and sense of humor by his loved ones.

A celebration of life will be held Wednesday, August 4, from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at Dickinson Family Funeral Home, 401 Main Street, Onalaska. Online condolences may be shared at www.dickinsonfuneralhomes.com
